Strawberry Farmer Math

In an effort to make math more interesting for kids and to make my kids understand that math really is important, I have started a series of Farmer Math questions to go along with the Flat Aggie reports.  These are patterned after the blog Bedtime Math. Some of the questions are easy enough for pre-schoolers and sometimes I come up with some to even challenge high school seniors.

These questions follow the report Flat Aggie Enjoys North  Carolina Strawberries.  Additional educational materials can be found in the post All About Strawberries.

1.  The average strawberry flower has 6 petals.  How many petals do three flowers have?

2. Strawberry farmers plant 15,000 plants per acre.  How many plants does Flat Aggie need to plant on 3 acres?

3. How many plants does Flat Aggie need to plant 46 acres?

4.  The average strawberry production for strawberries is 25,000 pounds per acre.
A) How many pounds of strawberries can be produced on 3.5 acres?
B)  How many strawberries in tons?

5.  The average at seed had 175 seeds on the outside.  How many seeds on would there be on 38 strawberries?

ANSWERS: 1.) 18 petals  2.) 45,000 plants. 3.) 690,000 plants 4.) A) 7,625,000 pounds B) 3812.5 5.) 6,650 seeds

Corn Farmer Math Planting Edition

1. A large tractor and planter can plant 30 acres per hour.  How many acres can Flat Aggie plant in 2 hours with the planter?

2. How many hours would it take to plant 300 acres?

3.  There are 80,000 seeds in each bag of seed corn.  Flat Aggie wants to plant 25,000 seeds per acre.  How many bags of corn seed will Flat Aggie need to plant 90 acres?

4.  If the seed bags weigh 54 pounds each, how many pounds of seed would Flat Aggie plant per acre?

5.  How many pounds of seed would Flat Aggie need in all?

ANSWERS: 1.) 60 acres 2.) 10 hours 3.) 28.125 bags of seed 4.) 16.875 pounds per acre 5.) 1518.75 pounds
