Introduction to Flat Aggie Project

I love teaching kids about where their food comes from.  When I can get my fellow farmers to help me it is even better.  Flat Aggie is a way to do just that the same way that Flat Stanley has taught kids for years.  Classrooms all over the country do projects based on the book Flat Stanley.  If you haven’t read the book, here is the basic info.  Stanley is a normal kid until a bulletin board falls on him and makes him flat.  His classmates find they can put him in an envelope and mail him all kinds of places.  He sends back reports on what he has learned.

The Idea

My friend Janice over at A Colorful Adventure helped her nephew with a Flat Stanley project and he went to several farms in the U.S. over 2 weeks.  Sarah at The House That Ag Built has been using Janice’s idea to bring agriculture to her classroom with Flat Aggie. 

Last year, I am worked with my son’s First Grade Teacher to bring a report from a farm for the last seven weeks of school.  In the 2013-14 school year, she (and 3 other teachers) will be getting a report from Flat Aggie every month.

We started with a plain paperdoll of Flat Stanley printed out the full size of a sheet of 8.5 by 11 inch paper. 

 

We decided we would send one Flat Aggie out into the world, so she had the kids vote for shirt, hair, eye color, etc.
